For almost 50 years, the Diggers community has shared a belief that gardeners have the power to nurture the earth and safeguard its future. As Australia faces a rapidly changing environment, declining biodiversity and growing pressures on our food systems, that belief is more important than ever. The Diggers Foundation already plays a vital role in responding to these challenges. With increased philanthropic support, we can extend this work even further and help create a more sustainable, resilient world for generations to come.
The Foundation exists to contribute to three deeply interconnected global needs:
- Supporting a healthier climate through sustainable gardening practices
- Protecting and restoring biodiversity
- Strengthening long-term food security
These goals are at the heart of our mission, and each one is strengthened by the generosity of members and supporters who believe in the power of plants, seeds and gardeners to create lasting environmental benefit.
At the core of our purpose is the protection and propagation of heirloom seeds and rare plants. These varieties preserve genetic diversity, flavour, resilience and cultural heritage at a time when global food systems are increasingly dominated by uniform crops.
Through workshops, publications, online learning and hands-on experiences, we help gardeners make choices that respond gently and meaningfully to a changing climate. Each compost heap, water-wise garden and thriving vegie patch becomes part of a collective contribution to environmental health.
Heronswood, The Garden of St Erth and Cloudehill are more than historic landscapes. They are living classrooms – places where visitors experience sustainable gardening principles. These gardens demonstrate regenerative techniques, climate-adapted planting, organic principles and design ideas gardeners can apply in their own spaces. With growing philanthropic investment, we can expand educational reach and deepen the impact of the lessons they inspire.
Our cafés take our mission into the kitchen by showcasing the remarkable flavour and diversity of heirloom produce grown on site. This fork-to-fork approach demonstrates that sustainable, open-pollinated food isn’t only better for the environment – it is more delicious, nutritious and varied. Through philanthropic support, we can broaden this model and inspire more visitors to rediscover the joy and flavour of heirloom food.
