Module 8 - Plant Propagation
The final module of this course looks at propagating food plants. This includes learning the requirements for successful propagation, as well as different techniques of propagation by seed, cuttings and division. Seed collection strategies will also be covered, as well as examples of propagating and producing plants for use in your own garden.
Lesson 1 - Introducing plant propagation
Growing your own plants from either seed or cuttings is incredibly satisfying and an economical way of trying many different species. We encourage you to give it a go. It is also kind of addictive. Gardeners are a bunch of generous souls who once you have expressed interest in a plant will often share seed or a cutting. So let us teach you how to propagate to make the most of those seeds or cuttings from your aunt or neighbour. It is a bit of a trial-and-error process and not all that hard. But first, a bit of botany.
Lesson 2 - Seed propagation
Seeds truly are amazing tiny living creatures. Everything you need for life is contained within the seed coat – a tiny embryonic plant and stored energy in the form of carbohydrates and proteins.
Lesson 3 - Cuttings Propagation
Propagating from cuttings is a way of growing plants that you like characteristics of, they are a clone of the mother stock (original plant). A cutting is a small section of plant material that you propagate to grow up a new plant which is the same as its parent.
Lesson 4 - Other methods of propagation
Some plants respond well to propagation using different methods; layering, division, budding and grafting. In this lesson we introduce a few methods but this is a whole big, beautiful area that we encourage you to explore.
Lesson 5 - Producing plants
Our final lesson looks out how to produce plants for that amazing food garden that you are about to build.
Quiz - Summing up Plant Propagation
You made it! We are at the final quiz. So good to see you. This quiz will test your knowledge of plant propagation. As you know, we don't keep the results this is quiz is to just help you consolidate your knowledge.
